introduction au 1er janvier 2002.

anglophone "Turkish Daily News".

'Clear signal' for Turkey's EU entry
Germany and France are to send a strong message of encouragement to
Turkey over its wish to join the European Union at a summit in
Copenhagen next week, the countries' leaders have said. "We are together
convinced first that we will have a coordinated, common stance from
France and Germany at the summit and second that there will be a clear
signal for Turkey," German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said after talks
with French President Jacques Chirac just outside Berlin.

Turkey, Greece boost Cyprus hopes
In an apparent change in Turkey's Cyprus policy, Foreign Minister Yasar
Yakis joins his Greek guest George Papandreou in stressing that the two
countries wanted a Cyprus resolution by the EU summit, but 'that's not
the end of the road.' Until now, Turkey was saying that unilateral Greek
Cypriot EU membership would be reciprocated with a strong reaction which
could include annexation of northern Cyprus. While Greek Cypriots
complain of mounting international pressure, US Undersecretary of State
Grossman stresses that Washington hopes the two peoples of the island
grasp the 'historic opportunity' and bring an end to the Cyprus problem.

Most Poles say talks on EU betray their interests
Nearly two-thirds of Poles think their government is not protecting
Poland's interests properly in its talks on European Union membership,
according to an opinion poll published yesterday. Growing political
strife surrounds the negotiations and signs of strain are showing within
Leszek Miller's socialist-agrarian coalition. In a debate on EU
enlargement in Poland's lower house, opposition MPs savaged the
government for failing to secure more in the talks.

Farmers march against EU offer
Thousands of Czech farmers have demonstrated in Prague against European
Union plans to offer only limited farming subsidies to future member
countries. Protesters pelted the agriculture ministry building with eggs
and tomatoes, waving placards denouncing the EU and - in one instance -
demanding equality for Czech pigs.
